Written by JMC47 on Aug. Dolphin on Android has had a bit of a checkered history since its inception. Users loved the idea of being able to take their favorite GameCube and Wii games on the go, but expectations and reality have never quite aligned. When Dolphin was first uploaded to the Play Store, developers tried to make it absolutely clear games wouldn't be playable, even going as far as calling it "Dolphin Emulator Alpha".

Unfortunately, despite many warnings, many people got their hopes up the moment they saw Dolphin was on the appstore and were ready to play their favorite games, even if their device wasn't. While not everyone had false pretenses as to what should be possible, a lot of users blamed Dolphin for being poorly optimized rather than understanding that it wasn't even meant to run full speed yet. The endless stream of poor ratings and angry comments eventually reached a breaking point and Dolphin was removed from the Play store mid That didn't mean development on Dolphin on Android had ceased, though.

Instead, builds were provided on our download pagesafely tucked away from the majority of users who may not understand the current state of the app.

After a 2 years break, Dolphin for Android is back on the Play Store! From now on, our beta versions will be updated there every month synced with our monthly Progress Reports. The original release of Dolphin on the Google Play Store in had very modest expectations. All a user needed was an ARMv7 processor and they were ready to go! That meant almost every Android device back in could at least run Dolphin to some degree. As explained by Sonicadvance1 at the timejust because it would run doesn't mean it was the experience everyone wanted.

If you're expecting reasonable speeds out of this, you are sorely mistaken. This will run slow on every single Android device, no matter if it is the most powerful one in the world.

While the original release of Dolphin on Android ran on most devices, major improvements to the app greatly cut down the number of compatible devices. Bywe saw our first ever fullspeed title! But that was merely WarioWare, Incone of the least demanding commercial titles available to Dolphin. Unfortunately, the then-current core of Dolphin on Android was pushed as far as it could go and the improvements slowed to a stop.

Just like why we removed our bit x86 JITARMv7's bit nature required all manner of crazy workarounds and prevented countless optimisations. It just couldn't be improved any further. ARMv7 was a deadend, and would soon be removed. I was pretty good with emulation on lower end android stuff prior to the Shield. Very impressed with some of the stuff you can get close to perfect. I started using Pal Europe Roms. It does make a slight tweak on a lot of games. Just slightly smother and a better experience. I even swapped out the ones I originally had as US. I'm using google play version of Dolphin.

Works- Straight out of the box - no messing. Just Works. Never played it before. Great Game. Loads of fun.

Tony Hawk 4 runs great again. Pleasantly surprised. It does slow down when its busy but I still played it front to back and will prob go back and have a mess around with the clock speeds. Resident Evil 4 — Plays great occasionally slows down but nothing huge. Again — this was before I started messing with clock speeds.

Freedom Fighters — The same as Resident Evil 4. Need to experiment with it but I had fun with it and it looked ok. Slowed down on very busy points — im sure I can tweak it. Full speed. It's essentially a Crazy Taxi rip off. Full speed no issues. No issues. I've heard the later ones are much better but struggle. Viewtiful Joe - Quirky and fun. Works great. Crash Team Nitro - Just Works.

I was planning to use it for DS, 16 bit and older games and maybe some n64, dreamcast and gamecube games. I mostly use it as a TV box.

You don't need to "mod" a Shield TV to do anything regarding emulation with it, they're all supported natively You can install Retroarch and be on your way.

Regarding the experience, there's absolutely no other Android TV box around that meets, or beats, the Shield TV in terms of performance really. Is it worth the price? But if you're thinking of buying one, it might be best to wait and see what the refresh of the Shield TV is going to look like. Should be announced in a few months I would imagine, could be slightly more powerful than the current 2 versions. Can you download the apps themselves from the playstore or do you have to transfer from the computer and sideload? Looks like a no brainer of a deal yet it doesn't seem to have that much traction in various communities as people never seem to speak about it.

Same issue, I think: I am attaching a log I can confirm the same issue with an xbox one s controller on the shield.

I also set autoconfig to no and max users to 1 for testing and it did not help anything. I do not have this issue with dolphin or any other standalone emulators I have tried. My temp work around is to install button mapper, map the middle xbox button to launch retroarch which makes the controller work again.

Retroarch not seeing all my Roms

The "fix" posted here by a couple of people is not much of a fix: exit to device home, then re-enter the Retroarch app. This works only if the emulator you have running is stable enough. Before, core was full speed up until 4x Internal Resolution using the Vulkan driver. Now, it stays locked at 40fps. This is independent of the Internal Resolution selected, from 1x to 4x. Deleting all options from cfg files and delete core didn't solve the issue.

Core stays locked at 40 fps in the 2 games tested that were previously full speed. Using Internal Resolutions 1x to 4x. Since commit: da Nvidia also released a new update for the Shield just before this started to happen. Suspected could have something to do with the issue but other Vulkan apps like Dolphin seem unaffected.

All default. Tried several performance options like disabling SW Framebuffer or Frame Duping, whatever the options, the game stays at 40fps. However, since updating my Shield, I noticed that beetle-psx-hw, dolphin-libretro and the menus detect a monitor refresh rate of 30 Hz, but only with Vulkan.

If I toggle fast-forward, both dolphin-libretro and beetle-psx-hw can exceed 60 fps. Thanks a lot for investigating this one hizzlekizzle. For me, menus XMB are 60fps. I can confirm tough that deactivating VSync makes the core 60fps again in game. Deactivating Audio sync also makes it go over 60fps so it does not seem to be a performance issue but something broken in VSync?

There have been several commits indeed since 10th December but no new builds at least not for Android I didn't notice any tearing even with vsync disabled, so I wonder if the Shield is forcing some weird driver-based vsync of its own With Vsync enabled, frame rate is set to 40 fps.

Disabling Vsync makes it full speed 60fps. Will post it in their community forum just to check if somebody else has seen this I also connected the shield directly to the TV. The PCSXrearmed core works without problems in retroarch, as do other cores such as reicast. I can also use Dolphin for example luigis mansion and have no performance problems. PAL games run fps stock beetle psx hw configuration NTSC games run 40 fps even fmv's stock beetle psx hw configuration.

Got a new shieldupdated to 7. Got the same issue with both vulkan and glad, I was able to test only PAL games though. Downloaded core, loaded RR Type 4, no change in options and again stuck at 40 fps. Disabled VSync and got 60fps. Since you're using Ozone, I assume you have a nightly installed? I might try that as well just in case
